Albert George Bates SELF, son of James SELF (c. 1839-c. 1919) and Maria Agnes BATES (c. 1874-c. 1919), was born circa 1893 in South Lopham, Norfolk. Albert’s military record is generally unreadable and therefore little information is available. It is almost certain that he had an association with the Norfolk Regiment from January 1910 till his death, either in the Reserves, Territorial Force or full service. Albert joined the 4th Bn. Norfolk Regiment Terratorial Force, private, ser. no. 1337, on 22 November 1910. Albert enlisted on 27 June 1913 - transferring from the Spedcial Reserve to 1st Bn. Norfolk Regiment, Private 8921. He died on 14 August 1914 - killed in acô€†Ÿon at Battle of Mons. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission grave registration entry for Albert was - SELF, Pte. A. G., 8921. 1st Bn. Norfolk Regt. 24th Aug., 1914. Sp. Mem. C. 29. Albert is commemorated at Elouges Communal Cemetery - Sp. Mem. C. 29.
